Readiness is one of the most important new software experiences tied to Apple Watch Series 12. The score combines recent activity, vital signs and sleep information to estimate how prepared a user is for exercise or recovery. Recovery scores are already common among Garmin, Polar, Oura and Whoop users, but Apple's implementation exposes the idea to one of the world's largest smartwatch audiences. The value is not simply another number.
Fitness wearables have historically encouraged users to move more, yet high training loads, poor sleep or elevated stress can make additional exercise counterproductive. Readiness attempts to interpret the data and provide a more useful recommendation about whether the user should recover, take things easier or train normally. Because Apple controls both the watch hardware and Health ecosystem on the iPhone, it can combine several streams of historical data into the calculation.
The feature further shifts wearable competition from collecting metrics toward interpreting what those metrics actually mean.
