Huawei's Mate XT2 is approaching its September 12 Chinese retail launch after being unveiled earlier this week. The second-generation tri-fold folds twice to transform from a compact smartphone into a tablet-sized display. Huawei has redesigned the hinge, improved water resistance and added an optional privacy display intended to reduce visibility from surrounding angles. The phone is powered by Huawei's new Kirin 9050 Pro and is priced from 19,999 yuan, with higher configurations reaching 24,999 yuan.

Huawei already holds a powerful position in China's foldable market, making the XT2 more than a technological demonstration. It represents the company's attempt to make one of the industry's most complicated form factors commercially sustainable. Apple's iPhone Duo now creates additional pressure at the premium end, but the two devices pursue different concepts: Apple uses a conventional single book fold, whereas Huawei maximises screen expansion through two hinges.

The market will reveal which compromise users actually prefer.
