Hyperkin Opens SupaBoy Crimson and Prime Preorders

Hyperkin has opened preorders for the SupaBoy Crimson and SupaBoy Prime, two new versions of its cartridge-compatible portable retro console. Both models are scheduled to launch in the United States and Europe on October 28. Unlike most contemporary retro handhelds, SupaBoy hardware plays original Super Nintendo and Super Famicom cartridges rather than depending exclusively on downloaded ROMs. The new models include a 4.3-inch IPS display and rechargeable battery rated for up to ten hours.

AV output allows connection to a television, while controller ports support local multiplayer. Crimson introduces a translucent collector-oriented design, while Prime uses colours inspired by Japanese and European Super Famicom hardware. The category is increasingly relevant to the wider mobile-hardware market because dedicated Android and retro handhelds are competing for many of the same portable-gaming customers as smartphones.

Hyperkin's focus on physical cartridges gives SupaBoy a distinctive niche as software libraries become increasingly digital.
