Scopely has started Monopoly Go's new Monster Mash season today, replacing the outgoing Looney Tunes collaboration with an improbable but commercially formidable combination of Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters and Ghostbusters. The season runs from September 23 through November 25 and features Huntr/x, the Saja Boys and familiar Ghostbusters characters across new events and board experiences.
KPop Demon Hunters content includes a themed shopping boutique, a Seoul street race leading towards the Underworld and a concert experience using songs including Golden and How It's Done. Ghostbusters contributes a rooftop race around 550 Central Park West and a Firehouse challenge involving the Proton Blaster. Two new competitive features add direct head-to-head play, while a Mystery Mansion Sticker Album introduces 25 collectible sets, including dedicated crossover pages.
It is difficult to imagine the original 1930s board game's designers predicting any sentence in the previous paragraph, but Monopoly Go has never been particularly constrained by the dignity of its ancestors. Scopely says the mobile hit has now passed 300 million downloads, explaining why entertainment brands continue lining up for collaborations. Monster Mash effectively turns Monopoly's board into an advertising multiverse, but at least it is a remarkably colourful one.
