ASUS has introduced the XG Core Radeon RX 9060 XT LP, a compact external graphics solution designed to provide additional processing power for compatible gaming handhelds, laptops and miniature PCs. Announced on November 6, the device features an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT LP graphics processor based on RDNA 4 architecture, accompanied by 16GB of GDDR6 memory. The XG Core connects through USB4, supporting bandwidth of up to 40Gbps, and works with selected devices including the ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X.

Measuring just 144 by 117 by 39 millimetres, the unit is substantially smaller than conventional desktop graphics enclosures. HDMI and DisplayPort outputs provide support for external displays, while ASUS GPU Tweak III software offers performance monitoring and adjustment options. ASUS is also promoting the device for creative applications and selected local artificial intelligence workloads.

The concept is attractive because it allows users to retain the convenience of a handheld gaming PC while connecting additional graphics power when a more demanding game or application requires it. However, actual performance will depend on the host system, connection bandwidth and software compatibility. Independent benchmarks will be necessary before meaningful comparisons with conventional desktop graphics cards can be made. Pricing and general availability have not yet been confirmed.

Apparently the future of portable gaming involves carrying a small computer everywhere and connecting it to a surprisingly powerful external companion whenever the explosions need to become more impressive.
