Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 with 2nm silicon and 5GHz-class CPUs

Qualcomm has unveiled its next generation of flagship smartphone processors, splitting the range between Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Both are manufactured on an advanced 2nm process, while the Extreme version pushes CPU clocks beyond the 5GHz threshold and targets the most expensive Android flagships. For mobile gaming, however, the more interesting development may be the graphics architecture.

Qualcomm's new Adreno design incorporates Neural Fusion technology intended to use AI-assisted rendering for super resolution, frame generation and ray-tracing reconstruction. In other words, future phones are increasingly borrowing the same trick PC graphics hardware learned years ago: do not brute-force every final pixel if software can intelligently create some of them for you.

Qualcomm is also claiming substantial performance and efficiency gains over the previous generation, although independent retail-device testing will matter more than launch-stage percentages. Early reference-device benchmarks suggest extremely strong GPU performance, but some tests have also highlighted heat and battery consumption under sustained benchmark loads. Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, RedMagic, Vivo and Xiaomi are among the manufacturers planning devices around the new platforms.

The mobile silicon arms race has therefore reached the slightly ridiculous point where a telephone can contain a 5GHz CPU and still spend most of its day displaying group-chat notifications.
