ArenaNet and development partner 2weeks have announced Guild Wars Afterlife, the first major new downloadable expansion for the original Guild Wars in almost twenty years. The announcement arrived on November 3 and received further international coverage on November 4. The expansion will launch on January 13, 2027, for PC, Steam, iOS and Android, extending the recently revitalised Guild Wars Reforged experience.

Afterlife takes players to Xotecha, a mysterious region connected to the Mists and the Order of Moonless Night. The central attraction is the Unformed, an ever-changing dungeon where environments, enemy encounters and bosses vary between attempts. A new Skill-Drafting system allows characters to acquire abilities from different professions during individual runs, creating combinations that would not normally be available through the game's conventional class restrictions.

Players can explore alongside friends or computer-controlled companions, with progression rewards influencing future attempts and providing permanent benefits outside the dungeon. The expansion requires Guild Wars Reforged rather than functioning as a standalone game. ArenaNet has announced a standard price of $29.99 or €29.99, with a temporary twenty-percent pre-purchase discount bringing the initial price to $23.99 or €23.99 in supported markets.

The publisher has also acknowledged that iOS pre-purchases were not yet available when the announcement appeared. For mobile RPG enthusiasts, the development is particularly significant because it brings substantial new content to a franchise originally released in 2005. Apparently some fantasy worlds simply refuse to retire, even after their original adventurers have had more than two decades to complete their quests.
