Mechanism launches a $9 Steam Controller Basegrip for phone-mounted Steam Link play

Mechanism has moved quickly around Valve’s new Steam Controller with a Basegrip accessory available from 4 May. The idea is straightforward: attach a grip to the back of the Steam Controller, then connect it to Mechanism’s existing mount ecosystem so a phone can sit above the controller. For mobile players, the most obvious use is Steam Link. Instead of buying a dedicated handheld PC, players can stream from your gaming PC to a phone and use the Steam Controller as the physical input device.

Mechanism is clear about the limitation, though: the controller does not currently work across all of iOS or Android as a universal mobile controller. The strongest use case is Steam Link, plus secondary uses like keeping Discord, guides or walkthroughs visible while playing. The Basegrip starts from $9, while a matching Steam Controller Dock is planned for June 2026.

Mechanism is also offering 3D printer files for the Basegrip and a stripped-down dock, which is a nice move for players who like tinkering with their setup.
