Switch 2 price rise turns handheld gaming into a 2026 cost story

Nintendo’s Switch 2 price increase has turned into one of the biggest handheld hardware stories of the week. Official notices confirm that the US MSRP will rise from $449.99 to $499.99 from 1 September 2026, while Europe, Canada and Japan are also seeing pricing changes. Japan moves earlier, with the Japanese-language Switch 2 model increasing from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 from 25 May. Nintendo also confirmed price revisions for several older Switch models in Japan and Nintendo Switch Online changes from July.

For players, the message is blunt: handheld gaming is getting more expensive. Switch 2 sits in the middle of the portable market, between cheaper mobile gaming and more costly PC handhelds. When Nintendo raises prices, it reinforces what buyers are already feeling across devices: components, currency pressure and market conditions are making portable hardware harder to keep affordable.
