Peridot leaves app stores today as Niantic Spatial prepares its August shutdown

Peridot reaches its next end-of-life milestone today. Niantic Spatial’s virtual pet game is being removed from app stores on 14 May, ahead of a full server shutdown on 31 August. In-app purchases had already been removed earlier, giving players a slow wind-down rather than an instant disappearance. The closure is notable because Peridot was one of Niantic’s more visible attempts to build a new location-and-AR-adjacent pet franchise outside Pokémon Go.

It had lovely creature tech, but not enough commercial momentum to survive. Mobile preservation is once again the uncomfortable story underneath the headline. When a live-service pet game goes away, players do not just lose levels; they lose creatures they bonded with. Niantic Spatial says it is exploring options for players who want to take their pets forward, but there is nothing concrete yet.
