Fairphone has officially retired the Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+, ending direct software support and sales of official spare parts earlier this month after an unusually long lifespan. The Fairphone 3 originally launched in 2019 with a five-year support target, meaning the company ultimately extended maintenance to roughly seven years. Its final security update was distributed in June 2026, with formal support ending on August 5.
Fairphone notes that wider 2G and 3G network shutdowns will increasingly affect fundamental connectivity for some older devices as well. The retirement is particularly interesting because Fairphone built its reputation around longevity and repairability. No physical device can remain useful indefinitely if network standards and software dependencies move beyond it, making software policy just as important as replaceable batteries and screens.
Owners can continue using functioning phones, but running an unsupported security build becomes progressively less advisable for sensitive activities. The end of Fairphone 3 support coincides with the company's expansion of newer Gen 6 hardware, illustrating both sides of sustainable electronics: building devices to last much longer than average while eventually acknowledging a practical support boundary.
