LEGO Digital Play acquires Offroad Games as mobile consolidation continues

LEGO Digital Play has acquired Offroad Games, the studio spun out from Space Ape Games, in another example of intellectual-property owners seeking deeper control over game development. Financial terms were not disclosed. Mobile gaming increasingly rewards companies able to connect brands, development teams and long-term live operations rather than licensing intellectual property to unrelated studios for one-off releases.

LEGO already has enormous recognition across children, families and adult collectors, making digital games a natural extension of its broader entertainment ecosystem. Owning experienced development capability directly can reduce the friction involved in prototyping new ideas and maintaining successful titles over many years.

The acquisition also illustrates continued consolidation across the games sector: smaller studios gain financial security and access to major brands, while larger companies acquire specialist talent without having to build teams from scratch. The key question will be whether Offroad retains enough creative independence to produce distinctive games rather than becoming simply another internal production unit.
