The Pokémon Company has delivered disappointing news to fans of Pokémon UNITE, confirming that the free-to-play multiplayer battle arena will permanently shut down on March 23, 2027. Developed by Tencent's TiMi Studio Group, the game originally launched on Nintendo Switch in July 2021 before arriving on iOS and Android later that year. After more than five years of competitive battles, the developers have decided that the time has come to close the servers.

Sales of Aeos Gems have already ended, and players can no longer purchase new premium memberships. Existing currency can still be spent until the shutdown, while current memberships will retain their benefits until their respective expiration dates. The developers are preparing a farewell programme featuring additional content, returning cosmetics and opportunities to obtain previously released Pokémon licenses.

A special Library feature arriving November 12 will allow players to preserve selected records and view certain content after the servers close, provided they complete the required download beforehand. The previously announced Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo competition will also proceed as planned. According to AppMagic estimates cited by PocketGamer.biz, UNITE generated approximately $107 million in mobile revenue during its lifetime.

That is a substantial achievement, although considerably smaller than the commercial performance of Pokémon GO and Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket. The shutdown illustrates the difficult economics of competitive live-service games, where maintaining matchmaking populations and regular content updates becomes increasingly challenging. For dedicated trainers, the coming months offer one final opportunity to revisit favourite Pokémon and settle unfinished rivalries.

Apparently even Pikachu cannot use Thunderbolt to restart a server once somebody has pulled the plug.
