Key takeaways

  • No Man's Sky arrives on iPhone and iPad occupying less than 4GB of device storage.
  • Supports hardware back to the iPhone 11 and 3rd-gen iPad Air with a try-before-you-buy model.
  • Rebuilt touch controls support flight, vehicles, and crafting, alongside external controller and TV casting support.

Hello Games has reached the announced October 28 release date for the iPhone and iPad edition of No Man's Sky, one of the most ambitious console-to-mobile adaptations attempted in recent years. The science-fiction exploration game offers an enormous procedurally generated universe filled with planets, spacecraft, alien creatures and opportunities for exploration.

Remarkably, the developer says the mobile edition occupies less than 4GB of storage while retaining more than forty major updates released since the original game's arrival in 2016. The package includes substantial expansions such as Voyagers and COSMOS, although some features have been adjusted for mobile hardware. Multiplayer is not supported at launch, while planetary settlements require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Hello Games has rebuilt the touchscreen interface to accommodate exploration, crafting, inventory management, vehicles and spacecraft controls. External controllers are supported, alongside television casting and mouse-and-keyboard input on compatible iPads. Another surprising achievement is compatibility with relatively old Apple hardware.

The developer lists the iPhone 11 and third-generation iPad Air as minimum supported devices, potentially making the game accessible to a considerably larger audience than recent premium mobile ports. The game uses a try-before-you-buy model, allowing players to experience the beginning before purchasing access to the complete adventure.

One important availability detail remains unresolved at publication: Hello Games announced October 28, but the United States App Store currently displays an expected date of October 29. Consequently, worldwide storefront availability should not yet be treated as independently confirmed. Even with that caveat, the technical achievement is impressive. Apparently the universe is infinite, but your phone's storage capacity no longer needs to be.
