September is increasingly demonstrating that premium mobile games are not disappearing beneath free-to-play releases. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris launched this week with a try-before-you-buy model, Playdigious confirmed Absolum for November 5, and other developers continue bringing full console-style experiences to iOS and Android. Modern flagship phones have enough GPU performance, storage and controller compatibility to make such games technically practical.
The larger obstacle has historically been user expectations around price. Mobile customers became accustomed to downloading games for free, making even modest upfront prices harder to sell than on consoles. Publishers are now experimenting with free introductory levels, subscriptions and cross-progression to reduce that barrier. The trend will not displace free-to-play gaming, but it is creating a healthier market for players who prefer complete games without energy systems, loot boxes or advertising.
