Key takeaways

  • Nexon will assume Japanese publishing operations for Blue Archive from Yostar around January 2027.
  • Player progress, character rosters, paid currencies, and items will carry over through an account migration process.
  • Development remains with NEXON Games, consolidating development, operations, and IP management within the Nexon group.

One of Japan's most successful mobile RPGs is preparing for a significant change behind the scenes. Blue Archive will transfer its Japanese publishing operations from Yostar to Nexon around January 2027, according to an announcement made during the game's October 25 livestream. The decision ends a publishing relationship that has existed since Blue Archive originally launched in Japan.

Development has always been handled by South Korea's NEXON Games, while Yostar managed Japanese publishing, marketing and associated activities. Under the new arrangement, Nexon will assume responsibility for the Japanese service, bringing development, operations and intellectual-property management closer together within the Nexon group. The companies say the transition was agreed following discussions between the parties.

Importantly, existing players are not expected to lose their progress, characters, purchased items or in-game currency. Account information will transfer through a migration procedure, with detailed instructions scheduled for publication in November. Nexon also plans to release a discussion video featuring Blue Archive executive producer Yongha Kim and Yostar president Li Hengda. The actual publishing transition is expected to involve maintenance during January 2027.

For players, the immediate concern is whether familiar services, community activities and promotional content will continue unchanged. Those details have not yet been fully explained. From an industry perspective, the move is noteworthy because it demonstrates how developers and publishers may reconsider their commercial relationships as successful mobile franchises mature. Consolidating operations could improve coordination, but retaining community confidence will be essential.

Apparently Blue Archive's students have discovered that even fictional academies occasionally experience very real corporate restructuring.
