Apple's A20 Pro is one of the most important semiconductor developments in this week's mobile hardware cycle. The chip is manufactured using a 2nm process and powers the iPhone 18 Pro family as well as the upcoming iPhone Duo. Apple combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU and dual neural-processing engines, while memory bandwidth has increased substantially over the previous generation.
The company is particularly emphasising sustained performance rather than short benchmark peaks, pairing the chip with larger vapour chambers in its premium phones. That matters for gaming and on-device AI because both workloads can generate considerable heat over extended periods. The move to 2nm also intensifies pressure on Qualcomm and MediaTek, both of which are preparing their own next-generation flagship platforms.
Smartphone chip competition is increasingly focused on performance per watt, AI throughput and graphics reconstruction rather than simply CPU clock speeds.
