Xiaomi's new 18 Fold remains one of the week's most important foldable launches. The device uses a passport-style design with a large 7.58-inch internal display and Xiaomi's internally developed XRing O3 processor. A 6,000mAh battery supports fast wired and wireless charging, while the Leica-developed camera system gives the device flagship photography ambitions. The foldable can display three applications simultaneously when open, emphasising productivity rather than simply media consumption.
Xiaomi's strategy is notable because the company is increasingly controlling more of its own hardware stack. XRing silicon, HyperOS, phones, tablets, smart-home products and vehicles all contribute to a broader ecosystem intended to reduce dependence on third-party platforms. Apple's arrival in foldables could increase consumer interest across the entire category, but it also raises expectations for software polish and long-term optimisation.
Xiaomi now has to prove its larger ecosystem can deliver similar integration.
