Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi are now simultaneously pushing major premium foldable devices, making September 2026 a defining moment for the category. The engineering problem of creating a durable flexible display has not disappeared, but the industry has moved beyond simply demonstrating that folding phones are possible. Consumers now need a reason to pay significantly more for them.
Samsung emphasises mature multitasking and years of refinement, Huawei offers a dramatic tri-fold screen, Xiaomi integrates its foldable with proprietary silicon and HyperOS, while Apple is attempting to make the iPhone Duo feel like a seamless extension of iOS and iPad-style workflows. Application support therefore becomes crucial. A large internal screen offers little value if apps merely stretch phone layouts.
The companies that convince developers to meaningfully use the extra display area may ultimately have a larger advantage than those with the thinnest hinge or highest-resolution panel.
