Apple Watch Series 12 continues Apple's effort to transform the smartwatch from a fitness tracker into a broader health-monitoring platform. The new generation introduces an updated sensing system designed to take more frequent heart-rate and variability measurements, feeding richer data into Apple's health-analysis tools. One of the most important additions is Readiness, which interprets recent exercise, sleep and vital signs to estimate whether the user should train normally, reduce effort or recover.

Similar recovery metrics have become central to Garmin, Polar, Oura and Whoop products, but Apple's enormous installed base could make the concept much more mainstream. The strategic value is also significant: years of personal health history make a wearable ecosystem increasingly difficult to leave. Watch therefore strengthens iPhone retention while becoming more useful as an independent product.

Apple's competition with specialised fitness brands is shifting from basic sensor counts toward interpretation and actionable recommendations.
