Apple's A20 Pro, MediaTek's forthcoming Dimensity 9600 Pro, Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro and Xiaomi's XRing programme illustrate how quickly smartphone silicon competition is changing. Raw CPU speed remains important, but efficiency, neural processing, graphics reconstruction and thermal behaviour now matter just as much. Advanced manufacturing processes are becoming increasingly expensive, which creates pressure to extract more useful work from every watt rather than simply raising clock speeds.
AI-assisted rendering provides one example: instead of calculating every pixel traditionally, neural networks can reconstruct detail or generate intermediate frames. Similar techniques are appearing across mobile photography, voice processing and system automation. The companies that control both silicon and software gain an additional advantage because they can optimise these systems together.
Smartphones are therefore becoming less like generic computers built from interchangeable parts and more like tightly integrated platforms where chips, operating systems and AI models are designed as one system.
