Xiaomi 18 Fold strengthens the race for wider foldables

Xiaomi's 18 Fold remains one of the most important new challengers in China's premium smartphone segment. The device combines a wider foldable form factor with Xiaomi's own XRing O3 processor, demonstrating the company's ambition to control more of its hardware stack internally. Multi-application functionality takes advantage of the larger display, while premium camera and battery specifications are intended to reduce the compromises historically associated with foldables.

The timing could hardly be more competitive. Huawei's Mate XT2 has just gone on sale, Apple has unveiled iPhone Duo and Samsung continues to defend its long-established foldable position. This means manufacturers can no longer rely on the folding screen itself as the primary selling point. Software layout, durability, camera quality, battery life and ecosystem integration are becoming the real differentiators.

Xiaomi's custom silicon adds another dimension because tighter chip-and-software integration could eventually produce optimisation advantages similar to those enjoyed by Apple.
