Passport-style foldables emerge as 2026's dominant new form factor

The foldable-phone market is converging around a shorter, wider passport-style format instead of the tall and narrow designs that defined many earlier generations. Apple's iPhone Duo, Xiaomi's latest Fold and Samsung's current Fold line all reflect the industry's push toward outer displays that function more naturally as ordinary phones while opening into squarer internal screens.

That change addresses one of the original foldable category's biggest weaknesses: users previously had to tolerate awkward cover screens in exchange for the larger interior display. Wider designs improve typing and app compatibility while also creating better proportions for side-by-side multitasking. The trend matters to software developers because physical design ultimately determines how applications should behave.

A squarer unfolded screen encourages two-panel interfaces and multi-window use rather than simply displaying a larger single-column phone app. Foldables still represent a minority of global smartphone shipments, but design convergence suggests the category is beginning to mature beyond experimental hardware.
