Game Freak's weather-powered mobile experiment becomes one of the week's most unusual announcements

Game Freak's newly revealed Ame no Chi Hare Onna — also translated as Rainy Day, Sunny Girl — remains one of the most distinctive mobile announcements of the past 48 hours. The free-to-play iOS and Android project is directed and produced by longtime Pokémon developer Shigeru Ohmori and is scheduled for a Japanese release during winter 2026. Its central idea grew from something surprisingly mundane: deciding whether the weather is suitable for hanging out laundry.

Real Japanese weather data influences the game, linking daily play with actual conditions outside. The story follows magical girl Hare Onna and her companion Kumorin, with weather transformed into part of the fictional world and progression systems. Rather than simply using GPS as many real-world mobile games do, Game Freak is experimenting with meteorological information as a recurring gameplay input. More details are expected around Tokyo Game Show this week. An international release has not yet been confirmed.
