Pokémon GO closes Mega Squads but its new Super Max system remains

Pokémon GO's Mega Squads event ended at 8 PM local time on September 14, but its most important mechanical addition remains part of the game. Mega Beedrill and Mega Houndoom can now progress beyond the previous maximum Mega Level to a new Super Max tier. Reaching that level unlocks additional Charged Attack functionality while the Pokémon is Mega Evolved, giving long-term Mega progression a new endpoint. Mega Squads also introduced Maschiff and Mabosstiff, while Shiny Flamigo became obtainable for the first time.

Event GO Pass rewards remain relevant immediately after the main event, with associated reward deadlines extending beyond the event itself. The addition of Super Max is more significant than a normal week-long event bonus because it establishes a system that can potentially be expanded to additional Mega Pokémon later. Pokémon GO is now more than a decade into operation, so extending existing progression systems has become increasingly important as Niantic looks for ways to give veteran players fresh objectives.
