Pokémon GO's new Super Max Mega progression begins its post-event life

Mega Squads has ended, but its most consequential addition is only beginning to matter. Pokémon GO's Mega Beedrill and Mega Houndoom can now progress beyond the previous maximum Mega Level into a new Super Max tier, extending one of the game's mature progression systems rather than replacing it with another temporary event mechanic. Super Max introduces additional Charged Attack functionality while the Pokémon is Mega Evolved, giving long-term Mega investment a new destination.

This is important for a game with a ten-year player base because veteran users often already possess strong versions of established Pokémon. Adding another meaningful progression layer creates a reason to revisit existing collections without invalidating them. The obvious question is how quickly the system expands beyond Beedrill and Houndoom. If additional Mega Pokémon gain Super Max progression over the coming months, the mechanic could become a substantial new endgame track.

If expansion is slow, it risks feeling more like an event curiosity. Either way, its impact extends well beyond the Mega Squads event that introduced it.
