Dimensity 9600 Pro targets 30-billion-parameter AI models on the phone

One of the more consequential claims around MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro is its ability to handle increasingly large generative and agentic AI workloads locally. The new flagship integrates upgraded neural processing and high-speed memory support, with MediaTek positioning the architecture for models reaching tens of billions of parameters under suitable configurations.

That does not mean every future phone will suddenly run a desktop-scale chatbot completely offline; memory capacity, model quantisation, battery use and thermal limits still matter enormously. It does, however, show where mobile silicon is heading. Instead of sending every request to a remote data centre, smartphones will increasingly divide AI tasks between local processing and cloud services. Local execution improves latency and can keep sensitive personal context on the device.

It also creates new hardware requirements, particularly around RAM bandwidth and sustained efficiency. The Dimensity 9600 Pro therefore represents more than another annual CPU upgrade: it is part of the infrastructure required for smartphones to become genuinely context-aware computing devices.
