Android 17 QPR1 strengthens desktop-style multitasking on larger screens

Google's stable Android 17 QPR1 release continues the operating system's gradual transformation into something capable of supporting desktop-like workflows. New windowing layout shortcuts make it easier to organise multiple applications, bubbles gain drag-and-drop improvements and taskbars can surface recently active applications. These changes are particularly relevant to foldables and tablets, where simply stretching a phone interface across a larger display wastes much of the available space.

Android hardware has already reached the point where flagship chips can comfortably run several demanding applications simultaneously; software has been the larger limitation. Better window management also matters for mobile gaming because players increasingly use Discord, browsers, streaming tools and guides alongside games. Google's challenge is maintaining simplicity on conventional phones while exposing more sophisticated controls when a device unfolds or connects to a larger display.

QPR1 suggests Android is increasingly treating screen size as a continuum rather than dividing devices rigidly into phones and tablets.
