iOS 27 turns Siri into a camera-based visual assistant

Siri AI's integration with the Camera application is one of the more practical changes arriving through iOS 27. Visual Intelligence allows eligible users to point the camera at something and ask questions or trigger actions based on what is visible. Apple's examples range from examining food information to extracting useful details from the physical world. This moves the smartphone camera beyond photography and toward becoming a general-purpose sensor for AI.

Google has been pursuing similar ideas through Gemini, making visual assistance one of the clearest battlegrounds between the two mobile ecosystems. The challenge is latency and trust. A visual assistant is useful only if users can invoke it faster than manually searching and if its interpretation is reliable enough to act upon. Privacy is equally important because cameras encounter documents, people and private environments.

Apple's broader strategy relies heavily on on-device processing and tightly controlled access to personal context, meaning visual intelligence will become a major test of whether that architecture works outside carefully selected demonstrations.
