iOS 27 gives parents granular Ask to Browse website controls

Apple's latest operating-system update substantially expands child-safety controls, including a new Ask to Browse feature that lets children request permission before visiting websites outside family restrictions. The idea sits between two imperfect extremes: unrestricted browsing and blanket blocking. Parents can instead approve new destinations as they arise.

iOS 27 also redesigns Screen Time information, expands Communication Safety protections and introduces schedules that can change application availability across different times and days. These changes arrive while regulators worldwide are paying increasing attention to children's relationships with smartphones and social platforms.

Apple has a structural advantage because parental controls can operate at operating-system level across iPhone, iPad and other family devices rather than depending entirely on individual apps. The difficult part will be usability. Controls that require constant parental intervention are often disabled, while automated systems that block too aggressively frustrate children and adults alike. The first weeks of iOS 27 will show whether Apple has found a workable middle ground.
