Retroid Pocket Duo Expands Android Handheld Competition

Retroid has revealed the Pocket Duo and Pocket Duo Lite, expanding its increasingly broad range of Android gaming handhelds. The new models offer different memory and storage configurations while targeting players who want more performance than entry-level emulation devices without moving into the price territory of full Windows handheld PCs.

Android handhelds have developed into an important category because they can combine native mobile games, emulators, remote PC play and cloud-gaming services in a single compact device. Retroid has built much of its reputation around providing strong price-to-performance ratios, but competition from Anbernic, AYN, Ayaneo and other manufacturers continues to intensify. Additional RAM and storage are particularly useful as Android games become larger and higher-resolution texture packs consume more space.

The Pocket Duo family therefore arrives at a time when dedicated Android handhelds are becoming less like simple retro machines and more like complete portable gaming systems. Pricing and real-world thermal performance will ultimately determine how competitive the new models are.
