Acer is preparing to introduce its Predator Atlas 8 handheld gaming PC to the United States, with retail availability scheduled to begin on November 1. The device will be sold through Best Buy with a starting price of approximately $1,299, placing it firmly within the premium Windows handheld category. The Atlas 8 uses Intel's Arc G3 platform, with configurations featuring the more powerful G3 Extreme processor.
Its eight-inch display offers a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate and variable refresh rate support. Additional hardware features include LPDDR5X memory, expandable storage, Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt connectivity and an advanced cooling system. The larger battery configuration offers 80Wh of capacity, making battery endurance an important potential advantage for demanding games.
Acer also includes Hall-effect triggers, configurable controls and software intended to improve navigation and system management. The company's pricing strategy is particularly interesting because the Atlas 8 undercuts several competing premium handheld PCs. According to Retro Handhelds, the new Acer device is approximately $500 cheaper than the latest MSI Claw configuration and around $300 below the comparable OneXPlayer 3.
However, price comparisons should account for differences in storage, memory and processor configurations. The Atlas 8 will compete against established products from ASUS, MSI and other manufacturers in an increasingly crowded market. Its success will depend on real-world gaming performance, driver maturity, battery endurance and availability. The November 1 date is a confirmed retail target rather than evidence that devices have already reached customers.
Apparently the portable gaming PC market has reached the point where spending $1,299 can be described as choosing the relatively affordable option.
