Key takeaways

  • AYASpace 2 Pocket Museum converts Android retro libraries into interactive 3D virtual exhibits.
  • Features integrated emulation, automatic ROM metadata matching, rewind, cheats, and network sync.
  • Initial support rolling out for KONKR Pocket Advance, KONKR Pocket Block, and AYANEO Pocket Micro 2.

AYANEO has introduced AYASpace 2, a redesigned interface for selected Android gaming handhelds that attempts to make browsing retro-game collections considerably more attractive. Revealed during an October 30 presentation, the software transforms a conventional games library into a three-dimensional virtual museum. Instead of displaying a simple list of filenames, AYASpace 2 presents games through visual representations of boxes, cartridges and related artwork.

Supported games can be recognised through their internal data, reducing the need for users to manually identify every title. Additional information includes platform details and metadata that help organise larger collections. The launcher also integrates emulation functionality, allowing compatible games to be started without navigating through several independent applications.

Other advertised features include rewind, cheats, screen filters, controller mapping and synchronisation between supported devices on the same network. The initial release supports KONKR Pocket Advance, KONKR Pocket Block and AYANEO Pocket Micro 2. AYANEO provides model-specific installers rather than a single universal package. Importantly, the software does not include commercial games, and users must supply their own legally obtained content.

The announcement is significant because software quality has become an increasingly important factor in handheld purchasing decisions. A powerful processor and excellent display are less appealing when the user interface requires the patience of an archaeologist. Apparently AYANEO has decided that an extensive retro collection deserves a museum, although fortunately nobody has to purchase admission tickets.
